Leaked Audio: Monica Mutsvangwa Defends Son Neville Following Arrest

A leaked audio, purportedly of Women’s Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa responding to her son Neville’s arrest for illegal trading in foreign currency has set social media abuzz.

Neville Mutsvangwa Arrested for Money Laundering

Neville Mutsvangwa was arrested by officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Criminal Investigation Department (CID) during a dramatic raid at his residence in Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday afternoon.

Before his arrest, Neville posted the number 18.25 enclosed in double brackets on his WhatsApp status, which some interpreted as indicating the black market exchange rate for the ZiG.

Monica Mutsvangwa Defends Son Neville in Leaked Audio

Now, an audio presumably of Monica Mutsvangwa reacting to her son’s arrest is doing the rounds on social media. In the leaked audio, Monica Mutsvangwa said her son is innocent and was arrested as a result of politics. She said the police only arrested Neville once they realised she is out of Zimbabwe.

“Thank you. it’s definitely political victimisation because mwana wangu haa tredhi in foreign currency. Haa tredhi in ZiG. So I don’t know what it is and why it had to wait for me to be away. Vanyatsotaimira kuti handipo. So I don’t know,” Monica Mutsvangwa said in the audio.

Social Media Erupts Following Leaked Audio

Following the audio’s dissemination online, Zimbabweans dismissed Monica Mutsvangwa’s assertions that the charges against her son are baseless. Others questioned her suggestion that Neville was only arrested because she is currently not in Zimbabwe. Here are some of the reactions:
