Malawi’s Vice President and Nine Others Missing After Plane Disappears
In a disturbing situation that echoes the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a plane carrying Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, the Vice President of Malawi has disappeared without a trace.
The aircraft, which departed from the capital city Lilongwe, was en route to Mzuzu International Airport on Monday morning but failed to land as scheduled. Dr Chilima and nine others were aboard the flight, which lost contact with aviation authorities almost an hour after takeoff.
Malawi’s aviation authorities have been unable to re-establish contact with the aircraft, sparking widespread concern.
President Chakwera Cancels Trip, Orders Immediate Search
On Monday evening, Colleen Zamba, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, released a statement confirming the incident. President Lazarus Chakwera, who has been briefed on the situation, has cancelled his trip to the Bahamas. He has directed all regional and national agencies to launch an immediate search and rescue mission to locate the missing aircraft.

The Office of the President and Cabinet wishes to inform the general public that the Malawi Defense Force Aircraft that left Lilongwe today, Monday 10th June 2024 at 09:17 Hours, carrying the Vice President, the Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, and nine others, failed to make its scheduled landing at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02.
All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the Aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far. As such, the Commander of the Malawi Defense Force, General Valentino Phiri, has since informed His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the incident and the President has since cancelled his scheduled departure for the Bahamas and ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft.
