Mamelodi Sundowns Appoint Portuguese Coach Miguel Cardoso as New Head Coach
Reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have officially named Portuguese tactician Miguel Cardoso as their new head coach. The announcement follows the dismissal of Manqoba Mngqithi, Wendell Robinson, and Romain Folz, signalling a major shake-up in the club’s leadership.
The news was confirmed by Mamelodi Sundowns chairperson Tlhopie Motsepe during a press conference on Tuesday.
Why Sundowns Fired Mannqoba Mngqithi
Motsepe explained that the decision to part ways with Mngqithi and Robinson, who had been with the club for over 20 years, was not taken lightly but was necessary to align with the club’s ambitions.
“This was based on the need for us to redirect, reenergize to make sure that our club can achieve the targets and milestones that we set for ourselves. This was by no means an easy decision. Coach Manqoiba Mngqithi and coach Wendell Robinson were two coaches that have been with the football club for over two decades,” he explained.

The Portuguese tactician will be assisted by Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene. Komphela rejoined Sundowns in July this year.
Miguel Cardoso was sacked by Esperance Sportive de Tunis in October, less than a year in charge. In a statement, the Tunisian club said the decision to go their separate ways was by mutual consent.
The Last Club Miguel Cardoso Managed
Cardoso took over the coaching role at Esperance in January and led the club to the CAF Champions League final after knocking out his current pay masters Mamelodi Sundowns in the Semis. Unfortunately, he lost 1-0 on aggregate to Al Ahly in the final.
His was not a trophyless season as he managed to secure the Tunisian league. Despite his successes, Esperance’s hierarchy was not pleased with the club’s slow start to the season. At the time Cardoso left the club, Esperance had managed to get two wins and two draws. In total he had managed 25 games, winning 15, drawing 7 and losing just 3.
