A ward councillor has committed to assisting men facing mental health challenges.
Elliot Mamadi of Ward 28 in Mentz, outside Mankweng, expressed shock following an incident where a man, aged between 30-40 years, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a bridge along the R71 road near the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) headquarters on Wednesday, 19 June.
“We are dismayed over this incident,” said Mamadi.
“As the Ward 28 community, we are deeply saddened and shocked to learn about the passing of our fellow brother in this manner. When I received the call about the incident, I quickly rushed to the scene, where we found the deceased in a pool of blood. He appeared very clean and was wearing expensive clothes, which suggests that poverty was unlikely the cause of his actions,” he said.
“It’s understood that the deceased spent a few minutes wandering around the bridge before he jumped and lost his life instantly. We’re now searching for his family to extend our condolences.”
Mamadi encouraged his community members to seek help when facing mental health challenges.
“My office is always open to everyone facing life challenges and mental health issues. It’s disheartening to see our people, particularly men, resorting to taking their own lives when confronted with such challenges. As municipalities, traditional leaders, and government, we are always here to assist our people. We are leaders because of them. Our people must not feel ashamed to call for help.”
Some community members speculated that relationship issues might have been a factor.
“Re imetswe! Mjolo is showing us flames. Maybe the poor man was dumped by his lover. May his soul rest in peace,” said Maria Rapetswa (36).
Mankweng Police Station spokesman, Sergeant Monatse Mamabolo, said the police have launched an investigation into the matter.
“We can confirm that on Wednesday, 19 June, police were called to the scene where an unknown man aged between 30-40 years was found lying in a pool of blood. He was certified dead at the scene by emergency personnel. At this stage, the identity of the deceased is not yet known. We call on anyone who could assist with information that could help police to identify the deceased to contact Mankweng Police Station.”
