Marondera Teacher Arrested For Using ZiG Currency to Pay for Groceries in Exchange of US Dollars
In a surprising turn of events, a teacher from Waterloo Primary School in Macheke was arrested for paying for swiping for groceries using his bank card which had the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency in exchange for US dollars.
The incident took place on May 10, 2024, at N Richards Supermarket in Marondera, where detectives from the CID Commercial Crime Division Northern Regions were conducting surveillance to arrest illegal money changers.
During the operation, detectives were equipped with trap money consisting of US$10 notes with specific serial numbers. The teacher approached them while they were shopping with a trolley filled with various groceries, including Tiggle Naks assorted snacks, Willards Things snacks, Baby Soft tissue rolls, Papyrus FM Counter book, Top Chef premium white rice, Mazoe Orange Crush, and Fizzi Cream-Soda.
The teacher approached the detectives and offered to swipe his CABS Bank card, containing ZiG, in exchange for US dollars at a rate of ZiG 14.11 per US$1. Additionally, he presented US$5 as a token of appreciation.
The teacher provided his CABS Bank card details and PIN to the detectives, who proceeded to swipe for the groceries at the till while the teacher waited outside the shop.
Upon receiving the grocery receipt totalling ZiG 999.07, the teacher calculated the equivalent in US dollars and requested between US$70-80 from the detectives.
Subsequently, the detectives handed over the trap money to the teacher and promptly arrested him.
