Mbare Musika Fire: Security Guard Accused of Lighting Blaze Denied Bail

The security guard who was arrested for allegedly lighting a fire that destroyed goods worth millions of US dollars and stalls at a section of Mbare Musika has been denied bail.

Charges Being Faced By Action Chakauya

The accused, Action Chakauya (35) of Majubheki Flats in Mbare, was denied bail when he appeared before the Mbare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of negligently causing serious damage to property as defined in Section 141 of the Criminal Law (Codification And Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 on Tuesday afternoon.

The complainant in this matter is Mbare Musika Retailers.

How the Fire at Mbare Musika Started Revealed

The court heard that Action Chakauya was employed as a security guard. On the 8th of this month, Chakauya was manning the premises opposite Mbare Musika Retail Market when he set a fire at one of the main entrances to the Mbare Musika Retail Market close to the precast wall outside the market to warm himself.

He lost control of the fire which razed down the Mbare Musika Retail Market. Police investigations led to Chakauya’s arrest. This was allegedly witnessed by other security guards who were on duty inside the market.

Security Guard Accused of Lighting Mbare Musika Fire Denied Bail

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the destroyed property is valued at USD 5,000,000. Action Chakauya was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 5 November 2024.
