Meet Hendrick Chebanga, The Zimbabwean Artist Who Created A Helicopter And Cars In South Africa

Zimbabwean artist Hendrick Chebanga has loved creating model cars since childhood; then, he decided to build a helicopter.

Chebanga stays in Hammanskraal outside Pretoria, and he makes a living by creating spitting models of cars, trucks, bikes, and anything with wheels. He owns and runs Hendrick Africa Craft Works.

He created a helicopter after getting inspiration from a South African army chopper that once passed above his home area. Chebanga built it all from scrap metal.

He told CGTN Africa:

“I started on the helicopter after I fell in love with it. When I built the helicopter, I used recycled material. I used to buy some of it from scrap yards. I spent eight months to complete this helicopter. One day, I saw a South African Army helicopter flying on top of me. It attracted me, so I decided to build one to display in my home. For now, the helicopter is my best creation. I’m looking to bring more beautiful creations.”

Some of Hendrick’s creations include an almost lifelike police Range Rover and smaller models used as toys for children. He told GroundUp that he also builds models of anything, even for companies, as long as he has a picture.

Hendrick has clients in different parts of the world, including Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana and the United Kingdom.
