President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially opened the new-look Meikles Hotel, which has rebranded to Hyatt Regency Harare.
The Official Opening
VP Chiwenga and most government officials, including Mthuli Ncube, Barbara Rwodzi and RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu, also attended the event.
The Meikles rebrand marks a new chapter in Zimbabwe’s hospitality industry, as the hotel was arguably the best in Harare and one of the top ones in the country.
This significant transformation comes five years after the hotel’s acquisition by Albwardy Investment, a UAE-based hospitality company, for a reported US$20 million in 2019.
Established in 1915 by the Meikle brothers, John, Thomas, and Stewart, Meikles Hotel has been a cornerstone of Harare’s social and cultural life.
The Hyatt Regency Harare is poised to welcome distinguished guests in August, coinciding with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit. This event will attract regional leaders to the capital and showcase the hotel’s new identity. Furthermore, the hotel will host some teams during the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, as Zimbabwe joins South Africa and Namibia in hosting the prestigious event.

Mixed Reactions and Nostalgia
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Zimbabweans.
Prince:
“Looks dope. Take me for lunch there 🤣”
Samke:
“Sad day… I loved the historic charm of the Meikles.”
Zivai Mhetu:
“As we celebrate the rebrand of Meikles to Hyatt Regency, I call upon Gvt to revise hotel taxes downwards to promote tourism. Hyatt Regency, with 312 rooms, is to pay USD 31,200 yearly for a ZBC license, then the tourism levy and other licences like Music rights and city council licences.”
