Another foreign national has been arrested in Soweto, Naledi, for operating a non-compliant spaza shop.
This marks the fourth arrest after inspectors from the National Consumer Commission (NCC) alongside Gauteng Health began blitz operations in the township.
The clampdown is the government’s response to rising concerns over potentially dangerous foods sold at spaza shops.
Last week six children died after consuming snacks, believed to have been contaminated from a shop in Naledi.
The NCC’s head of investigations, Prudence Moilwa, said the findings are concerning.
“We’re finding a lot of non-compliance, expired goods, labeling issues and it’s worrying because consumers don’t know what they’re eating,” said Moilwa.
