More Details Emerge On Death of Zimbabwe’s Youngest Chief
New details have emerged regarding the death of one of Zimbabwe’s youngest traditional leaders Chief Marupi from Dibilashaba in Gwanda South,
The 28-year-old, whose real name was Oaheng Nare, reportedly died after what was initially described as a short illness. However, it has now come to light that he passed away at Health Point Hospital in Harare after being admitted with severe stomach pain and vomiting.
Family Points Fingers at Zanu PF Councillor
Chief Marupi’s family is questioning the role of Mphathiswa Ncube, the local Zanu PF councillor and chairman of the Gwanda Rural District Council, who was the last person to see him alive. Ncube had reportedly driven the young chief to Harare for medical treatment, raising questions within the family as to why he couldn’t receive care in Bulawayo, which is closer to his home.
Molisa Nare, a local headman and relative of the late chief, said:
“We’re still in a state of confusion about his death because before he is taken to Harare he was complaining of a headache. Now we’re being told in Harare he had an upset stomach. The whole thing is difficult to understand. We hope the postmortem will shed some light.”

The chief’s aunt, Angelina Marupi Moyo, told community radio station Ntepe-Manama FM that the circumstances surrounding her nephew’s trip to Harare seemed mysterious. She explained that while the family knew he had a headache, learning that he was later admitted with severe vomiting and stomach pain has left them even more distressed.
She told local community radio station Ntepe-Manama FM:
“His departure from home for Harare is something we’re still trying to understand. Another thing is that we knew him to be having a headache and the new narrative from the hospital that he was vomiting and had a runny tummy adds to our confusion. We’re in pain over what has befallen us.”
ZANU-PF Councillor Declines to Comment Until After Burial
When reached for comment, Ncube said he would address the situation only after the burial.
“I’m sorry, for now I’m not in a position to comment. I will comment after the burial,” he told ZimLive.
The chief’s body was expected to be transported from Harare on Friday, with burial likely set for Sunday, according to family spokesperson Chris Marupi.
