Motjatji Thoka murder: 19-year-old Zimbabwean found with body parts of missing 17-year-old sentenced

19-year-old Zimbabwean found with body parts of missing 17-year-old Motjatji Thoka sentenced! A Zimbabwean national, Brian Mugwira, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison by the Polokwane High Court in Limpopo for his involvement in the brutal murder of 17-year-old Motjatji Thoka from Mokomene village.

The case, which has shocked the local community, involved the gruesome dismemberment of the teenager’s body after she went missing in early January 2024.

The provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, recounted the timeline of events, explaining that Motjatji Thoka was reported missing by her family on January 5, 2024. A missing person report was filed at the Botlokwa police station, located within the Capricorn District. The case was soon escalated to the Provincial Missing Person Task Team in Limpopo as efforts to locate the young girl intensified.

“After an extensive investigation, her remains were found on January 8, 2024, in the yard of an occupied house,” said Ledwaba. The discovery sent shockwaves through the community, as several body parts were missing from her remains, indicating the brutal nature of the crime.

Following the discovery, police identified Brian Mugwira, aged 19, and his co-accused, Tatenda Sithole, 36, as primary suspects in the murder. Ledwaba confirmed that Brian Mugwira was found with some of the victim’s body parts in his possession. Mugwira’s arrest came after a thorough manhunt led police to the mountains near Ndzelele village in Thohoyandou, where he had been hiding out. He was apprehended on January 26, 2024, following a nearly three-week search.

Sithole, Brian Mugwira’s co-accused, was arrested earlier, on January 16, 2024, at a rental property in Mokomene village. Despite being implicated in the crime, Sithole pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his trial has been scheduled to begin on June 2, 2025. Meanwhile, Mugwira, who admitted his role in the horrific crime, pleaded guilty during his court appearance on Thursday and received a 22-year prison sentence for murder.

Throughout the investigation, police and prosecutors worked closely to gather crucial evidence against the suspects. Mugwira’s admission of guilt and the physical evidence, including the discovery of body parts in his possession, played a pivotal role in securing his conviction. His sentencing marks a step toward justice for the Thoka family, though the community continues to grapple with the shock and pain of the tragedy.

Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the investigative team’s dedication and perseverance in solving the case. “I commend the team for their diligence in uncovering the heinous acts of these criminals and ensuring that justice is served for the victim,” Hadebe stated. She added that while the sentencing of Mugwira provided some closure, there is still a long road ahead as Sithole’s trial approaches.

The case has garnered widespread attention due to its brutal nature, with calls for harsher penalties for crimes of this magnitude. The public, alongside advocacy groups, has voiced concerns about the safety of young women and girls in rural areas, where cases of abduction, assault, and murder have become all too common.

The police continue to urge communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could lead to the prevention of such heinous crimes. Authorities have also highlighted the importance of community cooperation in cases like Motjatji’s, where timely information can make a significant difference in locating missing persons or apprehending suspects before more harm is done.

As Sithole’s trial approaches, all eyes will be on the court proceedings, where further details of the murder may emerge, shedding light on the full extent of the crime and its motivations. For now, Mugwira’s conviction offers some solace, though the lasting impact of the crime on Motjatji Thoka’s family and community remains profound.
