Mozambique Opposition Leader to Declare Himself President

Mozambique’s opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane has vowed to declare himself president on January 15, rejecting his defeat in the October 9 presidential elections. This move has sparked violent protests across the country, with Mondlane’s supporters demanding an end to Frelimo’s 49-year rule.

The unrest escalated after Mozambique’s Constitutional Council confirmed the election results on December 23, resulting in at least 21 deaths. FRELIMO offices, police stations, banks, and factories have been looted, vandalized, and set ablaze. The capital, Maputo, was eerily quiet on Christmas Eve, with businesses closed and people staying at home to avoid the escalating violence.

Mondlane claims the election was rigged, challenging the victory of FRELIMO’s candidate, Daniel Chapo. Despite his declaration, it’s unclear how Mondlane intends to take office, as he is currently in self-imposed exile.
