The State in the corruption matter involving Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said that the former Speaker allegedly used the kickbacks she received from a contractor for house renovations.
Earlier on Tuesday, Mapisa-Nqakula appeared at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where she was served with an indictment of her charges.
She is facing 12 charges of corruption and one of money laundering.
It’s alleged that as defence minister, she solicited and received kickbacks amounting to R4.5 million from a defence contractor.
In February 2016, the South African National Defence Force awarded and then subsequently suspended a R104 million logistics tender to Umkhombe Marine.
As defence minister, Mapisa-Nqakula allegedly offered to intervene on behalf of Umkhobe, in exchange for kickbacks.
The indictment served to Mapisa-Nqakula on Tuesday showed at least R1.6 million in cash was paid to service providers that were doing renovations and decorations at her home.
The State said that Mapisa-Nqakula used this method as a way to conceal and launder her corrupt funds.
The matter has been adjourned to 16 October for pretrial proceedings at the Pretoria High Court.
