NSFAS to take over payment of student allowances

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme or NSFAS says it’s gearing up to take over the payment of student allowances.

It is trying to cut out companies contracted to make the payments – or the middlemen – following delays in disbursements and claims of conflicts.

NSFAS pays out nearly R50 billion a year to eligible students to pay for their accommodation and student fees.

They also receive allowances for things like textbooks and food.

There were delays in the payment of allowances last year and an uproar in April – with beneficiary students threatening a national shutdown.

The Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimanded, then dissolved the NSFAS board and placed the institution under administration.
