One person dies and 2 missing after double cab bakkie plunges into Tsomo River

The Eastern Cape traffic department has confirmed the tragic death of one person and serious injuries to five others after the driver of a double cab bakkie lost control and plunged into the Tsomo River.

The incident occurred late on Saturday night on the R409 road between Tsomo and Ngqamakhwe.

Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn into the river.

This weekend, the Eastern Cape has been battered by severe weather, including heavy snow and poor visibility, complicating travel for many motorists.

The deceased driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured passengers were quickly transported to Cofimvaba Hospital for treatment.

“In the bakkie, there were 7 passengers, 2 of them disappeared in the Tsomo River. Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. Wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Police and rescue teams have been deployed to search for the missing passengers,” said Eastern Cape transport spokesperson Makhaya Komisa.
