Arrest and Charges
Social media buzzed last Friday with news that the 35-year-old daughter of the Defence Minister had been arrested, sparking widespread speculation. Sources from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) later confirmed that Tanya Rushesha had been taken into custody on fraud charges. According to a source who spoke to ZimLive, Rushesha was accused by three individuals of scamming them. She allegedly approached them, claiming to sell bulk fuel. The business owners placed large orders and paid her, but she failed to deliver the fuel.

Authorities Remain Tight-Lipped
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has remained tight-lipped about Rushesha’s arrest. When contacted for comment last Friday, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that he had not yet received information about Rushesha’s arrest.
Nyathi said:
“I’m yet to receive any information.”
Attempts to reach Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri for a statement were also unsuccessful, as she was returning from an official trip to Zambia at the time.

Tanya Rushesha Reaches Settlement in Fraud Case
Just as Rushesha was scheduled to appear in court on Monday, the fraud charges against her were withdrawn. Her accusers, understanding the situation, decided to reach a settlement with her, sparing her the embarrassment of a public trial. The details surrounding the settlement between Rushesha and her accusers remain sketchy at the time of writing.
This is not the first time a child of a senior government official has been arrested for allegedly breaking the law this year. In May, Neville Mutsvangwa, the son of Women’s Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, was arrested on charges of illegal currency dealing. Mutsvangwa’s mother claimed the arrest was “politically motivated.”
