Play Turns Tragic
According to eyewitnesses, Kupakwashe was playing with his friends near his parents’ house when he fell into the open sewer drain, located just meters away.
The young boy’s body was later discovered approximately 10 kilometers downstream from where he fell in.
Search and Rescue Efforts
A frantic search ensued involving the Fire Brigade and local residents, lasting two hours before Kupakwashe’s body was finally retrieved from the sewer outlet in Mufakose.
Official Response and Investigation
In response to the outcry, Harare City Council’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Stanley Gama, emphasized the importance of reporting damaged infrastructure promptly.
“We repair all damaged sewer pipes because this exposes the public to diseases such as cholera. However, on this particular incident, the engineers from the water department are saying the issue was never reported while residents are saying they reported the case. We are still investigating what happened and why the sewer pipe was not attended to for a long time,” Gama stated.
The incident has left the boy’s family devastated and the community in mourning.

@Cliff Chandaverengwa;
Director of works and his team are sleeping on duty. This may very well be a pandemic with municipalities. Excavations take forever to be backfilled. Sadly the managers do not reside in these areas, and it’s therefore of no concern to them.
