Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has vowed to resign from his position should he fail to fight crime in the province.
Lesufi’s comments follow the murder of a five-year-old child in Soshanguve who was shot and killed during a suspected hijacking last week.
He said that while there is progress being made in addressing the rife lawlessness the root of the problem is that ways of policing in the country are outdated.
He said that he believes using technology such as the rollout of cameras in the province and using drones will make it easier to prevent and deal with crimes.
However, if this fail he said he will not fight a losing battle.
“I’m quite convinced that if I fail in this task to fight crime, I’ll throw the towel. I’ll resign. I don’t want to paint a picture where I’m in charge of something that I know I’m not winning the battle.”
