Police recover stolen vehicles in Ngqeleni and Mthatha raids! An 18-year-old suspect believed to have a stolen vehicle, was arrested after attempting to flee from police during an intelligence-led operation in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
The suspect, who tried to escape when he saw the authorities approaching, was quickly apprehended by the officers involved in the operation.
The operation was conducted following a tip-off about suspicious activity in the area. Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo, confirmed that the police tracked the vehicle in the Dontsa and Mangwaneni localities. Acting on this information, the officers moved in to apprehend the suspect, but he attempted to run away upon spotting the law enforcement officers. However, his attempt was unsuccessful, and he was soon arrested.
“Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered that it was missing a license disc, raising further suspicions. The officers then proceeded to the suspect’s residence, where they uncovered a cache of stolen property,” said Captain Matyolo. The items recovered at the suspect’s house included a radio system, speakers, a laptop, police-issued trousers, live ammunition for a rifle and revolver, and other items believed to be stolen.
The police suspect that the young man may be part of a broader criminal operation involving stolen goods, including firearms. Captain Matyolo praised the efforts of the police team for acting swiftly on the intelligence and recovering the stolen items.
In a separate operation on the same day, the Mthatha K9 Unit acted on a tip-off about another suspected stolen vehicle in the Tracor area of the Thabo Mbeki Administrative region. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered an Isuzu bakkie displaying false registration plates, which raised immediate suspicion. Upon further investigation, the police traced the vehicle back to Ugie, where it had been reported stolen.
In addition to recovering the stolen bakkie, police found that the vehicle was loaded with 10 goats and three sheep, believed to have been stolen as well. This discovery prompted the involvement of the Mthatha Stock Theft Unit, as officers worked to trace the origins of the livestock and ensure that they are returned to their rightful owners.
During the operation, the officers conducted a search of the premises and found the keys to the stolen vehicle, as well as a 9mm pistol with its serial number erased. The police believe the weapon may have been used in other criminal activities. However, the primary suspect in the case was not present at the time of the raid, and police are continuing their investigation to track down and apprehend him.
The recovery of the stolen vehicles and the arrest of the suspect highlight the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in combating crime in the Eastern Cape. The collaboration between various units, including the K9 Unit, the stock theft unit, and local law enforcement agencies, demonstrates the commitment of the police to curbing vehicle theft and other related crimes in the province.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Matyolo emphasized the importance of community involvement in these operations. “We encourage members of the public to continue providing information to the police to help us in our efforts to fight crime,” said Matyolo. He noted that community tip-offs played a vital role in leading the police to the suspect and recovering the stolen property.
Both operations serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement in the Eastern Cape to combat vehicle theft, stock theft, and illegal possession of firearms. While the investigations are still underway, the arrests and recoveries signal progress in the fight against organized crime in the region. Police are confident that with continued cooperation from the public, more criminals involved in these activities will be brought to justice.
