Zimbabwe’s Potraz Greenlights IMC Communications for Internet Service License with Starlink Partnership

In a landmark decision for Zimbabwe’s telecommunications sector, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has granted IMC Communications a crucial license to offer internet services, marking a new chapter in the country’s digital evolution.

This development follows IMC’s strategic partnership with Starlink, the satellite internet service developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Axcording to The Herald, Potraz, had officially granted IMC the ISP(Internet Service Provider) operating license in Zimbabwe. IMC Communications received official confirmation of its Internet Service Provider (ISP) license from Potraz this week.

IMC’s managing director, Denny Marandure confirmed the development. He expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating that this approval signifies the beginning of a major digital transformation in Zimbabwe.

Potraz director general Dr Gift Machengete confirmed the development saying the regulator had approved the application by IMC Communications for the ISP licence

They made an application for what is called ISP or internet service provider and we approved it,” Dr Manchengete said.

Marandure highlighted that IMC’s new role will stimulate competition and innovation in Zimbabwe’s internet market, leading to lower prices and improved service quality.

“This is no doubt a game changer for customers where other internet solutions are either unattainable or cost prohibitive,” he noted.

He also emphasized IMC’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, which aims to ensure reliable connectivity for all citizens and embrace a digital future.

IMC Communications plans to begin rolling out wireless kits to enhance connectivity across the country. This rollout will significantly boost internet speeds and availability, especially in underserved areas.
