President Cyril Ramaphosa pays courtesy call to UN SG

President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid a courtesy call to United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York. The two met after the opening of the Summit of the Future which adopted a PACT of the Future.

The pact seeks to reshape multilateral institutions to better respond to the complex challenges that the international community is facing. The challenges include sustainable development as well as peace and security.

Ramaphosa is leading the South African delegation to the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Ramaphosa says, “We leave this Summit with a more ambitious, clearer and concrete call to action to build a world for future generations that is in a far better state than in which we found it.”

Earlier, he called for the pact to be inclusive and expressed a desire for it to generate a global commitment that represents the views, concerns and interests of the Global South with a key focus on global action in support of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Today, Ramaphosa’s schedule in New York includes a roundtable on navigating a new landscape for African minerals, a meeting with the non-profit Business Council for International Understanding in relation to issues of trade and diplomacy and a meeting with American business leaders and investors at the New York Stock Exchange where the President is also expected to ring the closing bell after the day’s trading.
