President Cyril Ramaphosa says the international community must pay attention to challenges such as climate change and conflicts in some parts of the world. He was addressing the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) in Beijing. Ramaphosa called on African leaders to work together to build a better continent.
He says, “Climate change is causing wide devastation. The world is falling behind in its efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The global contestation for critical minerals is fuelling geopolitical tensions. These challenges affect all nations. China’s President Xi Jinping has announced a R50 Billion commitment to support his country’s plans to contribute to Africa’s development. This is part of a 10-point plan to support and strengthen relations with African countries.
China has pledged to support Africa’s modernisation to help the global south to develop. Beijing will open its markets to 33 countries in Africa, including South Africa. The countries will enjoy zero tariffs on all Chinese products Addressing the forum, Xi told African leaders that his country would help them deal with the issue of tariffs.
He says, “We have decided to give all LDC’s (Least Developed Countries) having diplomatic relations with China including 33 countries in Africa zero tariff treatment for 100% tariff lines. This made China the first major developing country and the first major economy to take such a step. It will help turn China’s market into Africa’s big opportunity.
