President Mnangagwa has categorically dismissed speculations that he harbors intentions for a third term in office. President Mnangagwa emphasized that there is “no iota evidence” supporting claims that he seeks to extend his tenure beyond the constitutional limits.
Under the Constitution of Zimbabwe, a President is restricted to serving two terms, each lasting three or more years. President Mnangagwa’s second term is set to expire in 2028, and he has unequivocally affirmed that he will not seek a third term.
“The supreme law of our land guides us,” he asserted, “and I respect its provisions.”The Constitution outlines a clear procedure for amending presidential term limits. Section 91 (2) allows for an extension beyond the two terms, but it necessitates a two-thirds majority vote in both the National Assembly and the Senator.
