Banda is accused of using the fake document to secure his candidacy, and police are now investigating Magaya over a similar case involving forged academic credentials.
According to reports by Nehanda Radio, police suspect that both Banda and Magaya obtained their forged documents from the same individual, identified as Anele Zikhali. Zikhali, who is currently in custody at Pumula Police Station, is accused of issuing a fake O-Level certificate and a Diploma in Marketing in Magaya’s name.
Gift Banda, meanwhile, is being held at West Commonage Police Station. Investigations reveal Banda allegedly paid for the fraudulent certificate in a single transaction, while Magaya reportedly made three payments totalling US$500.
How Gift Banda Forged His Certificate
The headmistress of Mpopoma High School has also been detained as part of the investigation. Police allege that Banda colluded with her to steal another person’s Cambridge transcript from 1986, using it to forge his fake certificate.
“It’s being alleged Banda took his fake certificate and went to Mpopoma High School and stole someone else’s transcript (Cambridge) from 1986 and acted like he had not initially collected his certificate. They allegedly connived with the headmistress to ensure anyone who phoned to confirm his certificate would be told it was legitimate,” a source close to the investigation told Nehanda Radio.
The candidate number on the fraudulent certificate is said to belong to a different individual who wrote exams in 1986.
Magaya Under Police Scrutiny
As for Prophet Magaya, police reportedly uncovered ZIMSEC certificates bearing his name, though the name of the school involved remains unclear. The source said,
“There are ZIMSEC certificates with Magaya’s name but I was not able to get the name of the school. It’s expected the police will be on their way to Harare to speak to Magaya.”
The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has confirmed that the certificates in question are fake.
