Public Safety MMC says investigators must cast net wide to fathom deaths of 5 children in Soweto

Joburg’s Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku has called on law enforcement to cast their nets wide amid investigations into the deaths of five children in Soweto.

It’s alleged the children consumed chips from a local spaza in Naledi before they died on Sunday.

While the contents of the snacks are suspected to have caused their deaths, toxicology results are yet to determine if the victims ingested any poison.

Tshwaku said local communities must also come to the table to tackle safety compliance at local businesses.

“If there’s a linkage between those chips and the spaza shop, then the people that must account is the owner of the spaza shop and the people at the property.”
