Deadly Seke Road Accident Claims Three Lives, Injures 31 Passengers

New details have emerged regarding the tragic accident that occurred along Seke Road in Harare. Three people lost their lives, and 31 others were injured when two kombis collided head-on yesterday morning. The accident was caused by a police officer, Sergeant James Makaranga, 37, who was driving one of the kombis.

Accident Details: Vehicles Collided After Police Officer Overtook Turning Vehicle

According to H-Metro, the accident took place around 6:45 AM when Sgt Makaranga, who is stationed at the Police Protection Unit in Chitungwiza, attempted to overtake a Mazda Bongo Van turning from St Patrick’s Road onto Seke Road.

During this maneuver, Sgt Makaranga’s Toyota Hiace which was carrying 15 passengers encroached onto the oncoming traffic lane and collided head-on with a Nissan Caravan driven by Tashinga Chihava, 22, which had 18 passengers.

Tragically, two passengers, identified as Wayne Chipuriro, 42, and Pecking Feliati, 40, died on the spot. Another passenger succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

Three Killed, 31 Injured in Horrific Seke Kombi Collision

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident and the loss of lives.

Police confirm the death of three people and injury of 31 passengers in a road traffic accident along Seke Road,” said Inspector Chakanza.

He further revealed where the injured passengers were ferried, stating,

Among the injured, 17 were rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital, 10 to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, and 8 to Parirenyatwa Hospital.”

Legal Consequences

Sgt Makaranga is facing charges for contravening Section 49 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23, which pertains to culpable homicide. Both Sgt Makaranga and Mr. Chihava failed to produce their driver’s licenses when traffic police arrived at the scene.

The vehicles involved in the collision were towed to ZRP Hatfield Traffic for inspection by the Vehicle Examination Department as investigations continue.
