Dozens of Bodies Discovered by Rescuers After Israeli Troops Withdraw from Gaza City Rescuers have discovered dozens of bodies following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza City. The grim findings come in the wake of Israel’s scaled-back military operations in the region.
The bodies were uncovered as rescue teams moved into areas that had recently seen intense conflict. The withdrawal of Israeli troops has allowed humanitarian efforts to commence, revealing the extent of the devastation and loss of life.
This discovery underscores the human toll of the ongoing conflict, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the violence. As rescue operations continue, more bodies are expected to be found, further emphasizing the devastating impact on civilians in Gaza City.
Israel’s military announced the discovery of drones and other weaponry in a Hamas combat complex located within the former UNRWA headquarters in Gaza City. The military stated that it had evacuated civilians from the area before conducting an attack. According to the report, Israeli troops engaged in close-quarters combat with Hamas cells that had entrenched themselves inside the UNRWA compound. Additionally, the military found a significant Hamas tunnel nearby and a weapons production facility beneath a university building.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad’s armed wings claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli forces using anti-tank rockets and mortar fire, asserting that their actions resulted in numerous casualties among the Israeli troops. The Israeli army has not yet commented on these claims.
Gaza City, which housed over a quarter of Gaza’s population before the conflict, was extensively damaged in late 2023. Despite the devastation, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians had returned to the damaged area before being ordered to evacuate once again by Israeli authorities.
On Friday, many residents returned to their homes to assess the damage after civil emergency teams extinguished fires from the early morning hours. Reuters footage revealed the extent of the destruction, including ruined roads and buildings, notably the former UNRWA headquarters. At Al-Ahli Hospital, bodies wrapped in white shrouds and marked with the names of deceased individuals were seen on the floor, underscoring the heavy toll of the ongoing conflict.
