SAPS confirms at least 50 people arrested during election period

Police have arrested 50 people from 98 election-related cases reported across the country.

The incidents took place between Monday and Wednesday, which includes the two days of early voting and election day.

The sentiment from SAPS is that this has been a largely peaceful election season.

The majority of the reported incidents relate to two incidents that took place in the Eastern Cape and in Thokoza, Gauteng.

Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said police were investigating 39 cases of contraventions of the Electoral Act.

“They include, among others, the destruction of voting material, the removal of the material, the intolerance where we find people assaulting one another, and we have cases where there are assaults and theft that were reported.”

Mosikili said police were also prepared to quell any unrest that may arise after the announcement of the election results.
