The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says it’s making significant headway in its R37 million tax evasion case against controversial businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize.
On Thursday, SARS deputy commissioner Johnstone Makhubu joined civic organizations at a picket outside the taxman’s Tshwane headquarters, held against whistleblowers’ safety risks.
The recent assassination attempt of SARS Advocate Coreth Naude sparked the demonstration.
Naude – who is representing SARS in Shauwn Mkhize’s tax evasion case – was hospitalized in July after two unknown assailants opened fire on her outside a hotel parking lot in Umhlanga, in KwaZulu-Natal.
SARS immediately condemned the attack and committed to working closely with police to root out the culprits.
The revenue service also revealed that its workers would not be intimidated by criminals and that investigations into potential crimes are continuing.
“I can confirm that process is ongoing, and we will continue to push it towards the end. It is nearing an end,” Makhubu said.
While the Hawks are investigating a case of attempted murder following the botched hit on Naude, SARS, and civil organizations believe the perpetrators will be brought to book.
Makhubu highlighted the importance of protecting whistleblowers across the various spheres of government.
“We are here to pursue a higher purpose we are here to help the government to create a capable state that is able to meet the needs of its citizens.”
Following the attempted hit on Naude, Makhubu revealed that psychosocial support was made available to all those who need it.
