Top-Ranking African Countries in Education
Seychelles, South Africa, and Mauritius claimed the top three spots for the highest education levels in Africa in 2024, ranking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively.
Zimbabwe closely secured 4th place, while the rest of the top 10 includes Botswana (5th), Gabon (6th), Sao Tome and Principe (7th), Tunisia (8th), Algeria (9th), and Egypt (10th).
Government Initiatives Contributing to the Success
Speaking during an interview with CITE, the Director of Communications and Advocacy at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Taungana Ndoro, attributed Zimbabwe’s impressive ranking to strategic government initiatives aimed at improving the education sector.
Ndoro highlighted that the country’s educational curriculum has undergone a significant transformation, moving away from colonial-era models and adopting a heritage-based approach.
“The curriculum is moving away from colonial education to a heritage based curriculum which uses an ethos of hunhu/ ubuntu (humanity) that reminds people of their heritage and who they are.”
Ndoro praised the Zimbabwean government for its commitment to advancing education. He acknowledged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s efforts in ensuring that the Ministry implements effective strategies to sustain the country’s high levels of education and literacy.
“We appreciate what the government of Zimbabwe is doing, in particular, His Excellency, the president of Zimbabwe Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa who has made sure that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education puts in strategies to maintain a high level of education and literacy within the country of Zimbabwe,” Ndoro explained.
The Global Impact of Zimbabwean Education
According to Ndoro, the impact of Zimbabwe’s high-quality education system is visible globally. He pointed out that Zimbabweans are occupying top-paying and prestigious jobs in countries such as South Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia, and more.
This, he believes, is a testament to the strength of the education system and the government’s commitment to fostering academic excellence.
