Sixth child from Soweto dies of suspected poisoning in hospital

Another child who allegedly consumed snacks from a spaza shop in Naledi, Soweto has died.

Seven-year-old Katleho Oliphant succumbed to suspected food poisoning, just days after five other children lost their lives under the same circumstances.

Oliphant has been hospitalized in critical condition at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital since last Sunday.

Oliphant had initially shown signs of improvement, but it’s understood his condition worsened in the days that followed.

His death has intensified the grief that already hangs over the area, as families and neighbours prepare for yet another heartbreaking funeral service.

Investigations into the exact cause of the food poisoning continue, with police promising answers and justice for the families of these innocent children.

The funeral for Oliphant will take place separately, following Sunday’s service for the other five children.
