Slain uMngeni DA leader’s family fear for their lives

Slain uMngeni DA leader’s family fear for their lives! The family of former uMngeni Municipality DA chief whip, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, remains in fear for their safety more than a year after he was shot and killed outside his home near Mpophomeni.

According to AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, the family is dissatisfied with the progress of the case and has had to abandon their home due to safety concerns. Ndlovu’s murder shocked the local community, and recent updates suggest the investigation has yet to provide substantial answers.

Family Forced to Relocate Amid Safety Concerns

Andrew Leask, the chief investigator for AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, revealed that Ndlovu’s family had to relocate due to mounting fears for their security.

Ndlovu was tragically killed in a brutal shooting incident, where he was struck by more than ten bullets in front of his wife and children. The traumatic event has left the family wary of further danger.

Leask, speaking to media outside Howick Magistrate’s Court, emphasized the family’s concern over their vulnerability and the lack of clear assurances about their safety.

Leask expressed frustration, noting that, despite repeated requests, there has been no confirmation of any heightened security measures for the family or at the court hearings. This absence of security measures and a delayed response from authorities have heightened the family’s concerns about their safety.

Suspect Appears in Court, Case Delayed for Further Investigation

The primary suspect in Ndlovu’s murder, 31-year-old Thobane Masobho Hlongwa, appeared in court recently facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

However, the case was again postponed to November 25, as the investigation continues. Hlongwa remains in custody, while questions linger over the potential involvement of other co-conspirators in the crime.

During Hlongwa’s appearance, task team members provided security for the state officials involved. However, no additional suspects were brought forward, which has led to concerns that Hlongwa, who is suspected to be a “trigger man” in the case, is facing charges in isolation. “We don’t see other co-conspirators in court.

He’s again appearing isolated, and it doesn’t make sense,” Leask remarked, expressing concern that the investigation might be targeting only low-level players in a larger conspiracy.

Delays in Communication with the Family and AfriForum’s Concerns

AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit, acting on behalf of Ndlovu’s family, has voiced frustration with the lack of transparency and communication from law enforcement and prosecuting authorities.

Leask noted that, despite multiple requests for updates, the family is often informed about court proceedings only after they occur. The family’s repeated attempts to reach out to the Minister of Police have gone largely unanswered, despite an initial acknowledgment.

The family’s disappointment was further compounded when the minister initially indicated that a response was being prepared, yet over a month has passed without follow-up. AfriForum sent an additional letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions, urging clarity and action. “We trust and hope something will come soon,” Leask said, adding that the family’s patience is wearing thin as they await answers about both the investigation and safety measures.

Outstanding Suspects and Police Response

At Hlongwa’s previous court appearance, the state prosecutor mentioned that there are still suspects outstanding in the case. Despite these comments, no new arrests have been made, and no details regarding these suspects have been disclosed.

AfriForum has offered to collaborate with police on the investigation by sharing information they have gathered, but so far, they have not been involved in Hlongwa’s arrest or broader investigative efforts.

Kamogelo Mogotsi, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed that the case remains ongoing. Mogotsi acknowledged receipt of AfriForum’s letter and indicated that the ministry intends to let the law “run its course.” However, this statement has done little to ease the family’s fears or address their frustration with the delayed proceedings.

Growing Calls for Justice and Transparency

The lack of communication and delays in the investigation have created uncertainty and frustration for Ndlovu’s family and supporters.

AfriForum’s involvement has highlighted the importance of transparency and timely responses in high-stakes cases, especially those involving public figures and violent crimes.

As the case heads for another court date, both AfriForum and the family of Nhlalayenza Ndlovu remain committed to seeking justice, urging authorities to accelerate their efforts.

The family hopes that with increased public attention, answers may finally come, ensuring accountability for Ndlovu’s murder and a resolution that restores a sense of security to his loved ones.
