South Africans have expressed fury after it emerged that illegal miners, popularly known as ‘zama zamas’, are requesting mayonnaise and tomato sauce, among other supplies.

Underground Zama Zamas Request For Supplies, Including Mayonnaise and Tomato Sauce

Illegal miners who remain underground in Stilfontein have sent a letter requesting supplies from the relevant authorities. According to the Daily Sun, the ‘zama zamas’ have reportedly asked for medicine, food, and specific items such as mayonnaise, tomato sauce, rice, tinned fish, and beef.

Greetings, we are asking for bathing soap,rollon and Omo washing powder to wash our clothes. 

“We are also asking for roll-on so that we can bathe. We are also asking for tomato sauce and mayonnaise. We have run out of meat. Please, give us tin fish and beef,” read the letter.

A picture of the letter from the ‘zama zamas’ has gone viral on social media, sparking a buzz. Many South Africans were astonished to learn that the requested supplies included items like tomato sauce and mayonnaise.

Social media users expressed outrage and frustration, questioning how such items could be considered essential. Some argued that the requests seemed more like they are stocking up for Christmas than a plea for survival. Netizens argued that the ‘zama zamas’ seem not to have any plans of leaving the illegal mine anytime soon.
