Disgruntled residents of the Stjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra township, north of Joburg, have vowed to return to the streets over electricity issues.
On Thursday, residents barricaded the N3 and Marlboro intersection with burning tyres and debris.
They said they had been without electricity for five days.
Calm has returned to the area, but police said they would continue to monitor the situation.
