Some student organizations are calling for the total restructuring of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) following the dissolution of its board.
On Thursday, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande dissolved the board with immediate effect and subsequently placed the funding scheme under administration.
Despite some organizations welcoming the move, others are not satisfied.
The South African Union of Students (SASCO) said the dissolution of the NSFAS board was long overdue because they had been calling for it since last year.
The union approached the Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande in September last year amid corruption allegations levelled against former NSFAS CEO Andile Nongogo.
SASCO said the dissolved board had been hamstrung, thus bringing the reputation of NSFAS into question.
Meanwhile, SASCO noted the need for a total overhaul of the funding scheme to root out corrupt activity.
