Survivors Speak On The Fatal Harare-Bulawayo Road Inter Africa Bus Accident
Sibonokuhle Nkomo, a mother of three, had boarded the bus with hopes of brightening her children’s Christmas. Instead, she found herself waking up to screams as the disaster unfolded.
“I don’t know what happened, but what I know is that the driver was speeding,” she told The Chronicle from her hospital bed at Gweru Provincial Hospital.
Sibonokuhle’s injuries were severe. Her left leg had to be amputated, leaving her with an uncertain future.
“I work in a shop in Filabusi, and my line of work involves travelling and standing. How am I going to do that now?” she asked tearfully.
“No Room for Safety”
Several survivors pointed to overcrowded and cramped seating as a factor in the injuries sustained. Joze Sanana, who was on his way to Bulawayo, said the lack of legroom left passengers vulnerable.
“I think the reason why almost all of the injured had fractured legs is because we were cramped up,” he said.
Charity Mhike, travelling with her four children, believes her decision to move two of her children to a vacant seat on the unaffected side of the bus saved their lives.
“I thank the Lord for giving me the wisdom to move my children,” she said.
Despite this, one of her twins fractured both legs, and she sustained a fractured left leg.
Witnesses and passengers agree that speeding was a key factor.
“From Harare, all passengers were saying they had no legroom, and the driver was going too fast,” said Joze.
Charity described the terrifying moment the bus crashed into a stationary haulage truck.
“I heard a loud bang, then screams. It was chaos,” she said.
Twelve of the 22 injured passengers have been discharged from the hospital, but survivors like Sibonokuhle Nkomo face long-term challenges. Her focus remains on her children’s welfare.
“All I wanted was to make my children happy. Now, I don’t know how to go on,” she said.
