A top Zanu-PF official appeared in court recently accused of taking advantage of a widow and grabbing her plush Borrowdale home, refusing to pay rent, and converting it into a shebeen.

The Harare Magistrates Court heard how Pardon Chibamu, a Mashonaland East provincial leader, allegedly took advantage of Victoria Matunga after the death of her husband. Matunga had listed the property for lease as a source of income.

While Chibamu initially agreed to lease terms, he reportedly reneged on the deal, subletting the property to Prince Chenzara and other tenants without Matunga’s consent and refusing to pay the agreed rent.

Chibamu transformed the home into a boarding house and later financed a shebeen, causing disturbances in the upscale Borrowdale West neighbourhood. Residents complained about the noise and disruptive activities. Despite repeated demands, Chibamu failed to pay two years’ rent, amounting to US$5,119.

Legal Battle and Eviction Order

Frustrated by Chibamu’s refusal to honour their agreement, Matunga took the matter to court. The Harare Magistrates Court ruled in her favour, ordering Chibamu and his tenants to leave the property and pay the outstanding rent.

The court’s order stated:

“You are directed to eject the said Defendant Prince Chenzara and all those claiming occupation through him from the premises 5 Sable Street Borrowdale West Harare or his goods and possessions from and out of all occupation and possession whatsoever of the said ground and/or premise and to leave the same to the end that the said may peaceably enter into and possess the same, and for so doing this shall be your warrant. In addition, you are required and directed to attach and take into execution the property of the said Defendant and to raise the sum of US$5,119 or his goods and possessions from and out of all occupation and possession whatsoever of the said ground and/or premise, and to leave the same to the end that the said may peaceably enter into and possess the same, and for so doing this shall be your warrant.”

Despite the eviction order, Chibamu, nicknamed “The Bulldozer,” has yet to vacate the premises.
