Tragedy Strikes Twice in Nyanga: Two Horrific Accidents Leave 8 Dead, 65 Injured

Nyanga-Rwenya Road Accident: 5 Dead, 60 Injured as Overloaded Church Truck Loses Control

In a tragic turn of events, five people lost their lives and 60 others were injured in a devastating accident along the Nyanga-Rwenya Road at the 34-kilometre mark, near Tangwena Turn-off in Nyanga.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) released a statement on Wednesday afternoon, confirming that the accident occurred on the evening of August 13, 2024, around 9:00 PM.

Details of Nyanga-Rwenya Road Accident

The accident took place when a Hino Dutro truck, carrying 64 church congregants, veered off the road while descending a steep slope with a sharp curve. The sudden loss of control led to some passengers being ejected from the truck, with a few tragically dragged for approximately 30 meters.

The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, including Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, Nyanga District Hospital, and Regina Coeli Mission Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Nyanga District Hospital mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.

Another Fatal Accident in Nyanga

In a separate, fatal road accident on August 12, 2024, around 10:00 PM, a Nissan Caravan kombi carrying 12 passengers overturned near Nyagoma Village on the Magadzire-Dazi dust road in Nyanga. The vehicle, struggling to ascend a steep hill, rolled backwards before overturning multiple times, resulting in the deaths of three passengers and injuries to five others, including the driver.

Police Urge Caution on the Roads

In light of these tragic incidents, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged drivers to exercise caution, especially when overtaking in unsafe conditions. Church leaders are also reminded to ensure safe transportation for congregants during large gatherings to prevent such accidents.

Additionally, the police emphasize the importance of regular vehicle maintenance. All vehicles, whether public or private, should be thoroughly serviced, checked, and certified roadworthy to ensure the safety of all passengers.
