Two Hatfield Men Arrested for Cheating in a ZIMSEC Mathematics Exam at Matthew Rusike College
Two men from Harare were arrested for cheating during a Mathematics examination at Matthew Rusike College in Epworth.
The suspects, identified as 37-year-old Paddington Chataika and Joseph Murimba, were caught in the act when a tip-off alerted officials from the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC).
Tip-Off Sparks Investigation
According to a ZIMSEC official, Paddington Chataika had arranged for Murimba to take the examination on his behalf. Tadzoka Chirima, the Harare Depot Loss Control Manager, arrived at the college to investigate after receiving the tip.
Upon his arrival, he met with the school headmaster, Tendai Mararike, to discuss the situation.
Chirima and Mararike then interviewed Murimba, who confessed to writing the exam for Chataika, who was reportedly waiting in the school car park.

Details of the Fraudulent Scheme
Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, the Harare provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the details of the arrest.
“Police arrested two men in connection with an examination sitting at a college in Epworth. The two are facing fraud charges,” he stated.
Chakanza revealed that a forged passport photocopy was used by Murimba to impersonate Chataika during the examination.
The document bore Murimba’s photo but contained Chataika’s personal details.
Additionally, Murimba was found in possession of a police form claiming that his identification particulars had been stolen and reported to the ZRP Hatfield.
Chataika and Murimba are now facing fraud charges.
Teacher Fined for Cheating in Previous ZIMSEC Exam Incident
Meanwhile, this is not the first time someone has been arrested for cheating in a ZIMSEC exam.
In March 2024, a 32-year-old teacher from Commercial College in Mutare was fined for writing a Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) exam on behalf of students.
Bruce Mugadhuwi was arrested for fraudulently sitting for a Mathematics exam for two students, Shellington Brown and Mirriam Maposa. As a result, he was fined US$150 for his actions.
