Update: Electricity restoration efforts continue in Joburg inner city after underground fire

Electricity restoration efforts continue in the inner city as residents in Braamfontein and surrounding areas spend a fourth day without power.

Large parts of Johannesburg’s inner city were left in the dark on Workers’ Day after an underground fire on the M1 double-decker bridge gutted electricity cables.

The incident has been blamed on theft and vandalism.

City Power said it was clearing rubble in the tunnels and would only be able to properly assess the damage once this is complete.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the entity could not yet determine when power will be restored.

“City Power will continue to communicate the developments on-site to the affected customers in Braamfontein and its surrounding areas. The areas are experiencing power supply interruptions between Braamfontein and Fordsburg substations.”
