Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez was involved in a violent brawl with Colombia fans after their Copa America semi-final match. The incident occurred when Nunez jumped into the stands, reportedly to defend his family, and clashed with supporters.
Uruguay captain José María Giménez blamed drunk fans for the chaos, stating that the players were protecting their families from an increasingly hostile crowd. “There was no police, and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink,” Giménez said.
South American football’s governing body, CONMEBOL, condemned the violence, urging fans to keep the passion peaceful. “Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field,” the organization said in a statement.
