Usindiso building fire victim’s wife reflects on emotional & financial toll

An elderly woman whose husband died in the Usindiso building fire reflected on the financial and emotional toll the tragedy has taken on her.

Hlabekisile Dlamini’s husband was one of the 76 people who lost their lives while desperately trying to escape the inferno that ravaged the hijacked building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg.

Saturday marks a year since the devastating fire altered the lives of more than 200 residents of the five-storey building.

Dlamini and her husband relocated from KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg to earn a living while their four children continued their studies in their home province.

Her husband was the sole breadwinner, and the money he earned not only provided for the family, but also covered their children’s school expenses.

She said that when her husband died in the fire, it had a profound impact on her family.

She now struggles to make ends meet on her own.

“I really need help taking care of my children because we have nothing. They are all in school and depend on me to provide for them, but I have nothing at all. Their father did everything for them, but now he’s gone.”

Dlamini described the Usindiso building fire as a curse for her family, with this time of year forever serving as a painful reminder of the tragic incident.
