Popular Mzansi fashion designer David Tlale is making headlines after he took a swipe at local celebrities for supporting luxury global brands while not paying local designers.
Tlale dropped some daring comments during his interview on the latest episode of Podcast and Chill with MacG.
The celebrated fashion designer accused local celebrities of being freeloaders who do not pay for his designs. Yet, they are willing to splurge millions on some of the world’s coveted luxury brands.
However, the designer didn’t want to name-drop, but he revealed some celebrities who commented on his price tags. Tlale has it that former Miss South Africa Basetsana Kumalo repeatedly said he charged too much.
However, he has it that those willing to work with him always want to use their influence as payment through marketing. This always takes a toll on him because he has expenses that need money rather than PR.

Tlale revealed that celebrities are willing to splurge millions on luxury brands that don’t even give them a nod. Tlale said, “People have the nerve to go to Diamond Walk and drop R200,000 in one day buying two items,” he said.
He revealed that celebrities opt for international brands over local luxury brands. However, he made it known that when celebrities share their behind-the-scenes stories, they focus on luxury global brands rather than local ones.
The celebrated fashion designer called out a few celebrities for not wanting to pay for his designs but willing to splurge millions on luxury brands that don’t care about who they are.
“They give free PR to these brands who don’t give a hoot about who they are,” he said. Clips from the viral interview have gained thousands of comments and reactions since they dropped.
On the other hand, fans were quick to drag a few celebrities who have been dragged for splurging millions on luxury global brands while not supporting local brands.
Over the years, DJ Maphorisa has been dragged for not supporting local brands. However, despite the rumoured allegations, he has recently supported local brands.
The award-winning producer recently splurged over R90 000 on Galxboy merchandise. Taking to Instagram, he shared a screenshot of his receipt and some of the clothes he had bought. Mzansi was quick to give him a nod for supporting local designers.
