ZRP Accused of Favouritism Over Passion Java’s Court Attire
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has come under fire for alleged favouritism following US-based cleric Passion Java’s choice of attire at the Harare Magistrates Court.
Supporting Friends in Legal Trouble
Java showed up at the court on Tuesday to support his friend Mike Chimombe and business partner Moses Mpofu, both facing charges of defrauding the government of over US$7 million in a failed Presidential Goat Scheme. Their bail hearing has been ongoing, and they spent another night in custody after the proceedings were deferred to Tuesday.

ZRP Accused of Favouritism Over Passion Java’s Court Attire
A video shared by @OpenParlyZw on X (formerly Twitter) showed Java arriving at the court wearing Gucci slides. This caught the attention of popular lawyer and High Court Advocate Fadzayi Mahere, who noted that such attire is typically not permitted in court. She criticized the ZRP for their selective enforcement of dress code rules, suggesting that Java’s celebrity status influenced the leniency.
“Mapata-pata ayo aren’t allowed in court. We call on @PoliceZimbabwe to enforce court dress equally. You can’t have one rule for mbinga and another rule for ordinary people. If it was a relative of one of the #CCC78 wearing slides to court, they’d be turned away. Musaite rusarura mari,” Mahere posted on X.

Public Outcry Over Unequal Treatment
Zimbabweans in the comments section concurred with Mahere’s criticism, expressing their frustration with the perceived preferential treatment afforded to the wealthy and influential. Here are some of the reactions:
@BaMtetwa:
