The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Western Cape said it had a responsibility to protect its constituency against unfair implementation of traffic by-laws.
This comes after the City of Cape Town proposed to implement a by-law that will make a provision for the impounding of any motor vehicle committing serious moving violations on the road.
According to the city, the by-law is aimed at protecting lives and ensuring safety on the roads.
The municipality has denied the allegation that the proposed law is targeting taxis.
Meanwhile, the provincial SANTACO spokesperson, Makhosandile Tumana, said the taxi body rejected the proposal.
“We really, really disagree with them, and we are not going to support under any circumstances. We know what our people expect from us, and we will try to engage with the City of Cape Town as we used to do,” said Tumana.
