Western Cape to spend R30 million on flood-damaged roads

The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure says recent floods have shown that climate change demands that adjustments be made in the design, construction and maintenance of road infrastructure.

Provincial Minister in the Department Tertuis Simmers visited a road site in Citrusdal that was severely damaged by the floods – leaving the farming community with no proper roads to transport their produce to markets.

A temporary bypass route is currently being constructed on the section of the road between Citrusdal and the N7 highway on the Cape West Coast and will take eight days. Simmers says the rehabilitation of the road includes a more permanent solution that will benefit and aid motorists during floods.

“Our infrastructure carries the brunt of things which are outside of our control. That includes the surrounding farmers (how they) maintain their berms and also clear the river area…,” Simmers says, adding that in the past it would’ve taken more than a year to clear the river but now it is being done with urgency. Simmers also notes that a permanent dual-carriageway system will cost about R30 million to construct.
