Businessman Wicknell Chivayo extended a helping hand to veteran journalist Geoff Nyarota, donating $15,000 to cover his medical expenses.
In his official statement, Chivayo confirmed that the $15,000 donation would be handled through his lawyer, Skhumbuzo Mpofu, at Munangati and Associates Legal Practitioners. He advised Nyarota’s wife to coordinate with his legal team to facilitate the transfer of funds.
“This is a time for compassion, not an opportunity to leverage someone’s desperate health condition to criticize the government or promote divisive narratives,” Chivayo stated.
Nyarota shows gratitude for the donation
In a post made on Facebook, Nyarota has expressed his gratitude to Wicknell Chivayo calling him ‘a stranger who came to the rescue.’ Geoffrey spoke about his plight and how friends turned their backs to him in a time of need.

He further states that Chivayo’s donation has given him a new lease on life. He also went on to share that several other colleagues came to the rescue after learning of Nyarota’s plight.
Chivayo’s Mixed Relationship with Journalism
Chivayo has been a polarizing figure, known for his business ventures and public criticisms of journalists he believes engage in unethical practices such as blackmail or sensationalism. However, in Nyarota’s case, he set aside his differences, recognizing the journalist’s distinguished career and contributions to the media landscape.
“I have never been, nor will I ever be, a fan of journalists who exploit their platform for personal or malicious agendas. But after deep reflection, I have decided to make an exception for Geoff Nyarota.”

Chivayo also took the opportunity to shed light on the advancements in Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector under the Second Republic. He pointed out the installation of over 120 dialysis machines and numerous chemotherapy machines across public and referral hospitals, emphasizing these developments as crucial steps toward improving healthcare access for all citizens.
