Workplaces can do more to promote mental health wellness

With the focus firmly fixed on mental health at the workplace this October, wellness organisations say South African workplaces can do more to promote wellness at work. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared “Mental Health at Work” to be the theme for Mental Health Awareness Month.

A corporate wellness organisation SoSerene has identified some ways to create a better work environment.

Chief Executive of SoSerene Cara-Lisa Sham explains how the workplace can be turned into a wellness space. “We talk about encouraging employees to take short breaks throughout the day which will help them reduce stress and improve focus.”

“I think it’s the little things that you can implement in an organisation to support your employees from a mental health perspective – likee greeting them, showing interest in their personal lives, greeting them by name because then they feel valued,” Sham adds.
