Reza Reveals Why ZACC Took So Long to Target Wicknell Chivayo and Associates Despite Leaks

Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) chairperson Michael Reza has explained why it took so long for the anti-corruption body to take action against the flamboyant Wicknell Chivayo.

Why ZACC Delayed Investigating Wicknell Chivayo

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the swearing-in of High Court judges at the Constitutional Court in Harare on Monday, Reza revealed the delay was due to a lack of substantial evidence against Chivayo and his alleged business associates Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu.

“When the first audio was leaked there wasn’t much for us as ZACC to go by. But when the document was subsequently circulated and an audio came out there was no substance from which we could commence investigations and that’s what we did,” Reza said.

ZACC Decided to Act After Second Audio and Document Emerged

Reza added that ZACC only acted after the second audio and document were leaked. He said investigators now have certain documents they hope to present to the trio when they come in for questioning. He added if all goes well they will take the matter to court.

“Our investigators are in the process of checking what they have found so far. What we have down is we have now called these three gentlemen so that we have certain documents which we will present to them. I hope I am not prejudicing the investigations but I want Zimbabwe to know that we have not been sitting on this. We have collected certain information. We have collected certain facts and when that information comes on the Form 242 which if everything goes according to plan we will use to go to court you will see detailed information with facts, figures and numbers,” he explained.

ZACC Warns Trio to Cooperate or Face Consequences

Reza assured the public that if Chivayo, Chimombe, and Mpofu do not voluntarily present themselves to ZACC, the anti-graft body will take action to bring them in for questioning.

“We know they have their rights but we have our time limit. If they don’t come we will go after them,” he said.
