Door-to-Door LPG Gas Filling Puts Lives at Risk: ZERA Warns Public Against Unlicensed Practices

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has issued a stern warning against the illegal and dangerous practice of door-to-door LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) filling. In a public notice shared on social media, ZERA highlighted the serious risks associated with this unauthorised activity, which has led to numerous accidents, injuries, and even fatalities.

Accidents and Tragedies

ZERA revealed that they have witnessed a disturbing increase in accidents caused by mishandling LPG in homes. These incidents have resulted in severe injuries, deaths, and significant damage to property. The authority emphasised that filling LPG cylinders in residential areas, without proper authorisation and safety measures, is illegal and endangers public safety.

“There is no operator who is licensed to conduct filling of LPG at people’s homes,” ZERA stated. They urged the public to report any individuals or companies involved in such activities to the police or ZERA itself.

Strict Regulations in Place

ZERA reminded the public that the regulations surrounding the filling of LPG cylinders are stringent for a reason. Retail filling of LPG must be conducted at inspected, designated, and licensed sites, where safety protocols are strictly adhered to. Additionally, only individuals who have undergone ZERA-approved training are authorised to refill LPG cylinders.

“Filling premises for LPG need to be inspected and approved by respective local authority fire departments,” ZERA explained. This ensures that all safety standards are met, minimising the risk of accidents.

What’s Allowed?

While door-to-door filling is prohibited, ZERA clarified that the delivery of pre-filled cylinders and the collection of empty cylinders by licensed retailers are permitted. These cylinders are then refilled at licensed premises that meet all safety regulations.

ZERA’s public notice serves as a crucial reminder for the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety when dealing with LPG. The authority’s message is clear: avoid illegal LPG filling practices, report any suspicious activities, and always choose safety over convenience.
